The renowned actors of economic life are also supporting the European Capital of Culture 2023 bid of Győr. A widespread alliance was formed in the interest of the success of Győr that declares: We are the flow!
At the feast on Wednesday, Zsolt Borkai, mayor of the City of Győr, István Szekeres and Tibor Csitkovics, the managing directors of Agrofeed Kft., Ernő Horváth and Ferenc Horváth, the managing directors of Alcufer Kft., Péter Lőre, Manager of Communication and Government Relations at AUDI HUNGARIA Zrt., Charles Wassen, the managing director of DANA Hungary Kft., Mária Mártonné Dr. Baj, representing the Leier Hungária Kft., Gábor Mersich, the economic director of NEMAK Győr Kft., Ferenc Bogisich, the chief executive of QP Zrt., Róbert Kocsis, the managing director of Security Patent Kft., Eszter Tóth, the managing director of UNIVERSITAS-Győr Nonprofit Kft. and László Gasztonyi, the managing director of Vill-Korr Hungária Kft. signed the cooperation agreement.
„We decided on applying for the title in 2016, before the organisation of the EYOF, but we already looked forward into the future and set new goals.” – started Zsolt Borkai his speech in that he informed the actors of the economic life about the current stand of our ECC bid at the gala evening held at the Richter Hall. As we know, Győr already qualified for the second round: „When I heard the decision I said in the language of sport: It is as if we had qualified for the Olympic Games, but we still have to win it!” – added the head of the city. We have to submit the bid for the second round on 9th November, and the decision about the winner will be taken in December. Besides our city Veszprém and Debrecen are still competing.
Before writing the bid we had a widespread consultation during that we asked the opinion of the citizens, artists, directors of cultural institutes and cultural experts in Győr. At our summer festivals the main idea of our ECC bid – the flow – was continuously present. As the slogan goes: We are the flow! – and we could experience it many times in this city full of life and culture.
The mayor was also talking about the three main program packages of the bid – the way, the city and the dialogue. „I don’t have to explain ‘the way’ in the case of Győr, as its geologic situation launched the city on the way of development that lead to the fact that now we are one of the most significant cities of Hungary. Of course we are not only talking about traffic roads, but also about cultural and touristic routes that Győr is more and more a centre of, and of course also about an economic path, as our city is one of the strongest economic centres of the country. ‘The city’ is the attraction itself, where the flow appears. From this segment I would emphasise the city workshop program, as many talented artists are working and learning in Győr, who can add a lot to the unique character and the values of our city. The city workshop can be the venue of their manifestation. ‘The dialogue’ may be the most important thing in the social life of a city. The dialogue with each other, understanding each other is just as important as the cultural dialogue. Győr is a cultural acropolis, so the dialogue appears in music, dance, dramatics, puppet art, fine arts and many other branches of art.”
Zsolt Borkai thanked the company leaders for standing again to such an initiative that the city can lead to success in cooperation. He reminded us that previously the Széchenyi István University, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Country, the Abbey of Pannonhalma, the Esterházy-castle in Fertőd, the Széchenyi-castle in Nagycenk, the Fertő-Hanság National Park, the City of Sopron and Dunaszerdahely joined the alliance. He added that even the Hungarian State helps the efforts of the city, as in the Modern Cities Program there are such cultural infrastructure-developments – like the renovation of the theatre or the new concert hall – that are further levelling up the city’s art life.
After the gala we asked the signatories why their companies held it important to join the initiative:
„Audi is at home in Győr, we got a lot from this city, so it comes natural to us to return it.” – said Péter Lőre, the Manager of Communication at AUDI HUNGARIA Zrt. As he told, the social responsibility is important for them, because through the supported good issues they can contribute to the raising of the life quality of Győr’s citizens. „If Győr gains the title – that I am almost sure of – the city can show itself in Europe even stronger.”
„As the leader of the 25-year-old company seated in Győr, as a provincialist and a honorary citizen every issue is important for me that makes Győr stronger and that spreads its reputation in the world. There is no better chance for that than the ECC.” – emphasized Ferenc Bogisich, the chief executive of QP Zrt. He added that as if it was no question that they would support the EYOF, it is neither a question that they will also help the capital of culture. „Culture touches many people, and through that Győr and the message of our city can get to whole Europe.”
“Győr is my home, I am the honorary citizen of this city. Though we are working in the whole country, we are doing our most important works here, and it is natural for us that we are striving to help the community.” – answered László Gasztonyi, the managing director of Vill-Korr Hungária Kft. to our question. “I am proud that being anywhere in the world I can experience that Győr became famous! This reputation and acknowledgement is no more only about the industry, but also about the culture, sport and many other segments of life.”
In the festive program the artists of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Győr, the National Theatre of Győr and the Ballet of Győr – representing five nations – participated, and with their help the flow (the main element of our ECC-bid) came to life.
