The program of the ‘European Capital of Culture’ was launched by the European Council in 1985. Since then the initiative has become more and more successful. The city of Pécs applied for it in 2010, and it was awarded the title. In 2023, Győr may become the second Hungarian city to be worthy for this honorary title.
