The national theatre of Győr would close its gates for two seasons so as to open up fully renewed for culture lovers again in the autumn of 2021. Borkai Zsolt, mayor announced where we can go to theatre during this temporary period at the joint meeting.
Orbán Viktor prime minister and Borkai Zsolt mayor of Győr announced in April, that within the frames of Modern Cities Program, with a state subsidy, the entire renovation of the building and premises of the National Theatre of Győr can be realized from 20 billion HUF. The project is crucial as regards the tender of the city for the title of the European Capital of Culture, as the renovation of cultural institutions are in progress from the own sources of the municipality, but the renovation of the theatre is a bigger scale, for which Modern Cities Program offers a great opportunity.
The mayor revealed that the two companies would move to the multifunctional hall of the Olympic Sport Park during the time of the renovation. For the transitional period of renovation that is expected to last for two seasons such a transitional home had to be found, that is a worthy and adequate location for the high quality performances, that is easily accessible, and can serve the cultural requirements as regards technology. The professionals looked for the best solution together, as they had to consider several factors. After the conciliation with the professionals, it seems that the most suitable decision could be made.
Borkai Zsolt mentioned that the sport developments that Győr required have been realized in recent years, but in case of all the investments multi-functionality was one of the key factors. Now this foresight provides the chance that the theatre can be placed not in a tent, under precarious conditions, but in the most modern centre of the city. Sport temporarily gives its place to culture, as the culture lover residents of the city and the two companies deserve that the continuity and the performances could be sustainable. Cultural investments have already started; we expect cooperation and patience from everyone for the transitional period. Borkai Zsolt said thank you to all the members of the companies for their high quality artistic activities that result in sold-out performances. The residents of Győr are asked to honour the performances during the transition as well, as everyone would do everything to provide the same high quality performances for the theatre lovers.
In the Olympic Sports Hall height, acoustics, space and service and storage facilities as well as changing rooms are provided, so there is no need for significant changes. Another vital aspect was to ensure parking facilities, that is also possible around the OSP. It is important to stress that the utilization of OSP for sports purposes is in progress, since in several rooms of the huge facility sports activities can be pursued.
Páternoszter Piroska, the mayor’s commissioner assured the participants that more branches united for the theatre, and for the audience, not to dissatisfy them or the season ticket holders, however we need cooperation to achieve our goals. The commissioner continued – The city is going to call for a tender next year how to renew the building of the theatre and the square in front of it, in which the aspect of green area would get a highlighted role.
Kiss János, the director of the Ballet Company of Győr recalled when he first came to the theatre in 1977, it was the most beautiful theatre in the country and he could see a miracle here. Now, after being a cultural labourer of the institution for nearly 40 years, he feels that the company can experience another miracle. As the second largest theatre of the country, with 650 guests daily, it was a tough task to choose a new venue, but the best and the wisest decision was made by opting for the brand new citadel of sports and let culture find space within its walls; we are grateful for that – said the director.
Forgács Péter, the director of the National Theatre of Győr said thank you for the new venue, and asked for the patience of the company.
