The logo and slogan of the ECC tendering period has been chosen from more than two hundred residential entries, that refers to the cultural diversity, to the city of rivers and to the driving force.
„A city always has to set a vision before itself. We have been preparing for successfully hosting the European Youth Olympic Festival for years, but we do believe that besides sports, our culture is also eligible for a European acknowledgement and recognition.”– said Fekete Dávid, vice mayor.
He also highlighted that the ECC tender is going to have a broad social basis, one of its elements is the slogan- and logo calls. Győr must compile the material for 2023 European Capital of Culture tender by December. The currently selected logo and slogan are about this period in the first round, the images will be finalized later to reflect the content of the tender.
„198 entries arrived for the slogan call, 38 entries were submitted for the logo call launched by the municipality. It is gratifying that so many creative local residents were motivated by these calls, not to mention the high quality of the entries that made the decision making procedure quite difficult for the jury.” – said Domanyik Eszter, the department head of City Marketing and Program Organization Directorate of the City Hall. She added that feasibility was also taken into consideration besides quality and expressive power, as the logo has to be suitable for several manifestations. The winning logo was submitted by Kókai Szilárd, who played with the label Győr2023, to express driving force, music, and dance, baroque and modern values of the city, as well as the rivers, the waves, and the flow in his sketch.
Grászli Bernadett, the cultural director of Rómer Flóris Art and Historical Museum mentioned in her assessment, that the logo processing the label Győr 2023 reflects the versatile program series from several perspectives, which may be realized in the ECC project. „The manifestation of the logo designed with letters resembling to codex letters reminds us for the history of Győr, its drawing qualities recalls the folklore art (embroidery patters), the dynamic overall image conjures the art of graffiti, or “streetart”, thus it is directly connected to contemporary culture. The logo features respect towards traditions and modern, innovative intentions.”
„I have been dealing with letters and typography for a long time, and I have wanted to show that letters themselves are expressive even without icons.” – said Kókai Szilárd about the background of his design. The young local graphic artist also added that he wanted to express the flow, the diversity and the dynamism typical to our city.
Enjoy the flow – is the slogan of the tender based on the entry of Chappon Máté. „I work as a hydro engineer, so it can be understandable that I tried to create a slogan in the city of rivers that is related to the flow and drift” – mentioned the creator of the slogan. He highlighted that as the city, the rivers are also drifting that provide great experience for all the visitors arriving here.
