The university, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma, the Esterházy-castle of Fertőd, Széchenyi-castle in Nagycenk, Hanság National Park and the city of Sopron also supported Győr to with the title of European Capital of Culture in 2023.
With their support the tender of Győr would be so versatile that may draw considerable attention – this idea was mentioned at the ceremony where Borkai Zsolt, mayor, undersigned a cooperation agreement with the representatives of outstanding cultural institutions of the region. The partners intend to support the city with common program elements, cultural programs, man-made and natural values, moreover they also agreed that the realization of the plans elaborated during the tendering procedure would serve the cultural, touristic and economic development of the region in the future regardless of whether the city wins the title or not.
„The EYOF this year has proved that with wide scale cooperation, with faith and hard work we can reach outstanding success. However, we wish to dream not only in the field of sports, but in the field of culture, therefore we would like to succeed in the tender for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2023 with a similar grandiose cooperation.” – mentioned Borkai Zsolt, who said thank you for the local residents for forming their opinion, and giving their advice to participate in the preparatory period, as well as he expressed his gratitude to the local cultural institutions, professional and the representative body for the accomplished work. He added that we must say thank you for the Hungarian state, as within the frames of Modern Cities Program several developments can be established in Győr which contribute to strengthening our culture – just think about the renovation of the theatre or the new concert hall. The Mayor said thank you to the partners as well, who gladly joined the group of the supporters of Győr. He reminded all of us that even a city from across the border, i.e. Dunaszerdahely, also supports Győr in this tender.
„It is honourable that we can be the partner of Győr in such a great competition, as the objective, to introduce our common, cultural values is important for all of us.” – dr. Fodor Tamás, the mayor of Sopron started his speech like that. He added that the city of Sopron could provide support with its historic values, fabulous landscapes, and with such artistic values that the Festive Weeks of Sopron and the unique milieu of the Cave Theatre. „We do wish a great success for Győr that would increase the prestige of the whole region.”
The arch abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma, Dr. Várszegi Asztrik highlighted that Győr and Pannonhalma are traditionally good partners in mediating culture. As he said, the Archabbey plays a crucial role in the education of cultivated minds, and has given such respected figures to Hungary as Jedlik Ányos from Győr, or Czuczor Gergely. „Pannonhalma has been building cultural bridges; it organizes nearly 70 cultural programs annually; besides its sacral, musical and historical programs, silence can be experienced by those who yearn for it.”
„Győr does not have residents but citizens!” – said dr. Földesi Péter, the rector of Széchenyi István University, who explained that this feeling and the devotion towards our city enable Győr to realize great objectives. That is why the university is a suitable partner for the city and therefore gladly cooperates with it. With a pinch of humour the rector drew our attention that with the partnership we gained two fascinating wine regions with Sopron and Pannonhalma, which also contribute to the diversity of our choice.
Mrs Egresits Firtl Katalin, the managing director of Eszterháza Cultural, Research- and Festival Centre Nonprofit Ltd. that operates the Esterházy Castle of Fertőd and the Széchenyi Castle of Nagycenk stressed the importance of the peerless cultural, spiritual and historical values that the two castles represent. „We can add architecture, musicology, landscape engineering, research and creative work, as well as the fabulous Baroque environment to the tender” – she mentioned and added that the road from Győr to Sopron leads through Fertőd.
„The natural values of the region are outstanding, our programs for ecotourism open up further choices for Europe” – said Reischl Gábor, the director of Fertő-Hanság National Park. He highlighted that the breath taking water world of Szigetköz, the wonderful landscapes of Hanság, or the Lake Fertő provide such environment that offer excellent alternative opportunities besides the urban programs.
„We invest the support of the entrepreneurs into the cooperation” – said Pintér-Péntek Imre, the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Győr-Moson-Sopron County. He added that the members of economy facilitate the development of the city with their taxes, besides that several companies take up patronage roles in the field of culture. He explained that with undesigning the cooperation agreement in the ceremonial hall of the City Hall such a valuable agreement was conducted that may provide great opportunities for the whole region regardless of the final result.
At the ceremony the cultural short film of Győr was accompanied by Burai Zsolt and his music companions live with a composition written for this very occasion. The students of Liszt Ferenc Music School took part in the program.
